Fern Eunice Ersland, 88, died Tuesday, March 22, 2011. Family present visitation will be 5:00-7:00 PM Friday, March 25th at George Boom Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, March 26th at Our Saviors Lutheran Church with burial to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.

Fern was born to Isaac and Alma (Hansen) Ellison on September 6, 1922 on a farm in Clay County, SD. She was born into a loving family with her twin sister, Phyllis Marie joining her older brothers, Earl and Morris. Fern graduated from Vermillion High School in 1940 and liked to tell her grandchildren she was the fastest runner in her school. She went on to graduate from Augustana College in 1945 with a degree in nursing. While there, she enjoyed her participation on the debate team. Fern met her husband, Harold Ersland, the love of her life, at Augustana. They lived in Sioux Falls their entire married life. Fern worked as a nursing instructor at Sioux Valley Hospital School of Nursing for over 25 years. She was a charter member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church and was an active member teaching Sunday School, providing leadership in the women's ministries and served as a Stephen Minister. She loved life and spent her happiest moments with her family.

She is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Harold; her children and their spouses, Barbara (Ron) Thomas, Spartanburg, SC, Tom (Jane) Ersland, Macomb, IL, and Mary (Mark) Ford, Henderson, NV; her grandchildren, Kristen (Kevin) Zeller, Alison (Michael) Redd, Matthew (Emily) Thomas, Ian Thomas, Scott (Amy) Ersland, Todd Ersland, Chris (Emma) Ford, Katie Ford, Cory Ford; and her great-grandchildren Mack & Ellee Ford, Leila & Reese Redd, Zachary Zeller, and Cooper Thomas. She was preceded in death by her parents, Isaac and Alma; her brothers, Earl and Morris; and her twin sister, Phyllis. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Sioux Falls, Television Ministry.
