He was a faithful member of the Bergen Lutheran church all his life, except for a few years when he was in Graettinger, Iowa, where he became a member of the Lutheran church which was organized there at that time.

While in Graettinger, Mr. Hegland was in partnership with his uncle in the mercantile business during the years 1893-97, and the following four years he was in the mercantile business in Eagle Grove, Iowa. He was the first rural mail carrier out of Roland, serving during the years 1902-05. Since 1905 he has been associated with the Hegland Produce Company in Roland. Also two grand-nieces, Lois Helland and Mary Ella Tysdahl, and one grand nephew, Eugene Helland, who is serving with the U.S. Army in Korea. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Iver and Bennie.

Funeral services were held from the Erickson funeral home and Bergen Lutheran church on Sunday afternoon, December 10, with Rev. Allen E. Nelson in charge. Mrs. Cecelia Rorvig sang the hymn, "Yeg Veden Vei saa fuld ar crengbel," at the funeral home. O. S. Boyd sang "Some Day We'll Understand," and "Den Store Hvide Flok" at the church. The front of the church was banked with flowers and many gifts of money were given to various missions in his memory.

Pall bearers were B. W. Evenson, Guy Wicks and W. N. Larson of Story City, and Dr. J. A. Snyder, S. J. Nelson and Orville Hagen of Roland. Mrs. A. R. Erickson and Miss Sylvia Thompson were in charge of the flowers. Burial was in the Roland cemetery.
