Leila Jane Hokel, 93, of the Eastern Star Masonic Home and formerly of 1012 Parkway Drive in Boone, passed away at the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa on Friday afternoon, December 26, 2014.

She was born on March 2, 1921 in Iola, Kansas the daughter of Elmore and Marie (Clauson) Bennett. Leila graduated from North High School in Des Moines. On October 16, 1940, she married Orlando Hokel at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Des Moines. She was employed at J.C. Penney’s in Boone for a number of years and later did clerical work for Fareway Stores corporate office in Boone. She was a member of the Augustana Lutheran Church where she enjoyed the weekly Thursday Fellowship gathering and Church quilting group. Leila also did RSVP volunteer work.

Her parents; husband Orlando in May of 1994; and 3 brothers, Derrick Bennett, John Bennett and Arthur Bennett preceded her in death. Surviving her are 2 sons Gary Hokel and wife Carol of New Brighton, Minnesota and Tom Hokel and wife Janet of Breckenridge, Colorado; a daughter Ardonna Buck and husband Ron of Rio Verde, Arizona; 3 granddaughters, Michelle Wood and husband Don of Temecula, California, Dana Maeda and husband Bruce of Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota and Shelly Pastrano and husband Ramon of Maple Grove, Minnesota; and 9 great-grandchildren.

Leila has been cremated. There will be no visitations. A memorial service will be held on Monday morning, January 5th at 10:00 a.m. at the Augustana Lutheran Church in Boone with Pastor Dan Solomon officiating. Interment will be in the Belmond Cemetery in Belmond, Iowa. In memory of Leila, memorials may be given to the Augustana Lutheran Church. Stark-Welin Funeral Directors in Boone, Iowa is in charge of arrangements.
