PFC Dennis O. Johnson. 20, Eagle Grove Marine, has been killed in Viet Nam as the result of gunshot wounds suffered in combat with enemy forces. His death came on Tuesday, Nov 5 in action near Da Nang. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ogden Johnson were notified on Friday, Nov 8. He is the only Eagle Grove serviceman to be killed in Viet Nam.
PFC Johnson had been in the Marines since June of 1967 and in Viet Nam since June 3, 1968. His tour of duty there was to last 13 months or until next February. He was serving with a weapons company in the 1st Battalion of the 5th Marines. He attended the Eagle Grove Community Schools and was also active in the scouting program in Troop 58 where he attained the Star Rank.
Survivors include his parents, two sisters, Sandra, 19 and Sharon, 10, a foster brother, George Cleveland, and his grandmother, Mrs. Hannah Johnson. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p. m. Saturday Nov 16 with the Kastler Babcock Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements. Friends may call at the funeral home any time after 8:00 a. m. Friday. The services will be held in the Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor H. W. Schiller in charge. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
