Mrs. Frances Easton Scott, who taught in the State Center school for a couple of years in the late sixties, passed away at the home of her daughter, Amy L. Donley in Eagle Grove Sunday morning. Funeral services were held at Eagle Grove Tuesday morning in charge of Rev. Tomlinson, pastor of the Eagle Grove Methodist church, and burial service was held at Hillside cemetery in State Center Tuesday afternoon.

Frances Easton Scott was born in Washtenaw county, Michigan, January 3, 1844. She was the second of seven children born to Phoebe and Harrison Easton. Her parents were farmers, and she grew to young womanhood upon the farm, attending country school, and later high school at Ann Arbor, Michigan. She taught school for a number of years and was so engaged at the time of the Civil war. In 1868 she came to State Center, Iowa, where she taught school for two years. In 1870 she was united in marriage with Eugene M. Scott of Washtenaw county, Michigan, and she and her husband came to Iowa and settled on a farm five miles east of State Center, where they resided for several years. Mr. Scott after leaving the farm engaged in the hardware business in State Center with Henry Keunecke for some time and in 1881 she and her husband moved to Eagle Grove where he engage in the general hardware business. Mrs. Scott came to Eagle Grove, with her children on the first passenger train ever to run into this city. She experienced all of the hardships and trails of those who build communities.

There were four children born to Mr. and Mrs. Scott, Amy L. Donly, a resident of Eagle Grove, R. E. Scott of St Louis, Missouri, both of whom survive, a daughter Fern Southwell who passed away April 18th of this year and a son Glen C. Scott, who at the age of two and one-half years, met his death accidentally drowning in one of the numerous marshes that were found where this city is now built. Mr. Scott was the first Mayor of Eagle Grove. He passed away May 1, 1884. Mrs. Scott was the widow of a civil war veteran, her husband having served in the 10th Michigan cavalry.

She became a member of the First Methodist Church of Eagle Grove, following some meetings held by the late Rev. C. B. Winters, in 1888, and for fifty years she took an earnest and active interest in the church. She was an emeritus member of the Equality club and a member of the Daleth Delphian Circle, both of Eagle Grove.

Mrs. Scott was 94 years of age last January 3rd, and except for the past few years of her life enjoyed exceptionally good health. She passed away after a lingering illness, at the home of her daughter Amy L. Donley, Sunday morning, July 31, 1938. In addition to her daughter and son, she leaves to mourn her passing a brother, Eugene Easton of Cleveland, Ohio, now 92 years of age, five grandchildren, Hugh S. Donley of Fort Dodge, Mrs. T. A. Gardner of Omaha, Nebraska, Mrs. E. R. McGrath of Eagle Grove, Mrs. Lester A. High of Rippey and Mrs. Howard Hughes of Fort Dodge, and eight grandchildren.
