Edwin Eugene Heerdt was born April 25, 1940 in Algona, son of Conrad W. and Lillian (Ackerman) Heerdt. He grew up in Burt graduating from Burt High School in 1958. Gene was married to Ruth Bunkofske on August 7, 1960. She preceded him in death on July 31, 1967. On August 3, 1971, he was married to Carol Haack in Titonka.

Gene was a truck driver for over 40 years and was proud to be accident free. He drove for Pioneer, Standard Oil, and Bituminous and then worked for Eaton Corporation in Belmond. He enjoyed country music, auto racing, target shooting, horses, and coffeeing at the Chrome. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Algona.

Gene Heerdt died Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at the Titonka Care Center at the age of 71. He is survived by five children, James (Cindy) Heerdt of Denver, CO, Janelle (Lindsey) Moe of Algona, Charis (Rick) King of Denver, CO, Tim Heerdt of Denver, CO, and Ron (Melissa) Heerdt of Denver, CO; seven grandchildren, Stephanie (Justin) Pawlowski, Alissa, Jordann, and Aaron Moe, Heather and Emma King, and Mackenzie Heerdt; two great-grandchildren, Anthony and Anna Pawiowski; a brother, Dennis Heerdt of Burt; and Carol Heerdt of Denver, CO. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Ruth.
