David Arthur Varland was born on August 21, 1934 to Walter B. and Cora Varland at Cherokee, Iowa. During his early years his family lived in Mason City, Clear Lake, Joice, Northwood and Hampton. At age 10 his family moved to Ames. He graduated from Ames High School in 1952, attended Iowa State College in Ames and transferred to the University of Iowa where he graduated from Dental College in 1959. On August 5, 1956 he was united in marriage to Marvel Huff at Ames. They moved to Eagle Grove and established dentistry practice with Einer Johnson in 1959. Dr. Varland was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Rotary Club of Eagle Grove since 1959 and served on the Rotary Ann Home Board of Directors since 1962. He also served on all the Rotary committees and was a part of its development, growth, and mission of caring. He was a life member of Iowa Dental Association, Ft. Dodge District Dental Society, American Dental Association, life member of Delta Sigma Delta, Iowa Lakes Dental Study Club, Eagle Grove Chamber of Commerce, 1967 Distinguished Service Award from the Jaycees, Park and Recreation Board, was a little league coach for many years, and Dollars for Scholar's Board. In 1996 he was awarded the Arries High School football Distinguished Alumnus Award for Excellence in Football and Life.

Dr. David Varland died Thursday, September 21, 2000 at St. Luke's Hospital in Florence, Kentucky, at the age of 66. Funeral services were held Monday, September 25, 2000 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Revs. Paul and Susan Stone and the Rev Damian Efta officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove.

He is survived by his wife, Marvel, of Eagle Grove; two daughters, Paula Sharp and husband Jeff, of Greensboro, N.C., Jennifer Efta and husband Damian, of Leavenworth, Kan.; son James and wife Amy, of Eagle Grove; six grandchildren, two brothers, Curtis and wife Helen, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Walter Jr. and wife Elaine, Cincinnati, Ohio, and one sister-in-law, Elaine Varland, Warwick, Rhode Island, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Willis Varland.
