February 19, 1907 --- June 1, 1988

James Gilligan of LuVerne died of cancer Wednesday, June 1, [1988], at the age of 81 at his daughter's home in Eagle Grove. Funeral service was held at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Livermore Saturday June 4, at 10:30 a.m. with Fr. Gerald R. Wingert officiating. Burial was in the Calvary Cemetery in Livermore with the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home of LuVerne in charge of arrangements.

James Gilligan was born Feb. 19, 1907 in Ivesdale, IL to James and Catherine Ryan Gilligan. As a child he moved with his parents from Illinois to Lizard Lake Church area in Iowa where he attended school. Mr. Gilligan married Helen Loftus Feb. 6, 1934 in Gilmore City, IA. The couple farmed south of Fort Dodge until moving to the Hardy area in 1944. There they farmed until 1958 when they moved to the LuVerne area. In 1960, Jim and Helen moved into LuVerne. Jim worked for P & M Stone, Humboldt, fulltime from 1960 until 1972 when he worked for them part time until his retirement. Jim enjoyed sports, cards, gardening and his friends. He was active in the Senior Citizens Club at LuVerne.

He is survived by his children: Regina, Mrs. Fred Madison, Eagle Grove; Michael, Carpenteria, CA; Patrick, Melbourne, FL; Mary, Mrs. Dennis Armstrong, Algona; Paul, Seattle, WA; Kathy, Mrs. Jim Jewell, Goldfield, IA; Teresa, Mrs. Jim Baer, Algona. Thirty one grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren also survive. Mr. Gilligan was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two sisters, two brothers, one half-brother.
