DEATH REMOVES JAMES A. SMITH FRIDAY DEC. 1

Purchased Original Homestead in Evergreen Neighborhood in 1869; Resident of County 60 Years

J. A. Smith, 87, a resident here for the past sixty years, passed away at his home Friday after a short illness He had been up town in his usual health on Wednesday but took sick that evening and failed to recover.

The deceased first came to this vicinity in 1873, purchasing a farm in the Evergreen neighborhood, which has belonged to members of the family since. He lived on the same farm for forty-four years, moving to Goldfield in January 1917, where he has since resided.

James Albert Smith, son of August Sylvania and Jerusha Smith, was born at Strong, Maine August 10, 1846. At the age of 19, he left home, coming to Wisconsin where he worked at the pinery and on farms until he came to Iowa. He purchased the original homestead in Evergreen in 1869. In 1873, he married Sophia M. Jensen, and settled on this farm. To this union were born two children, Erman S. of Barrington, Illinois, and Albert J., who died in infancy. In April 1880, his wife Sophia M. passed away. In October 1882, he married Caroline A. Nielson, who passed away on June 30, 1929. To this union were born four children: Mrs. Sophie Nervig of Hardy, Mrs. Julia Warner of Page, North Dakota, Warren and Marcia of Goldfield. Besides these, he leaves eighteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

When he first came to the home farm, he joined the Boon River Riflemen's Association and remained a member until the association had no further usefulness. He was a member to the Methodist Church for forty years. He had voted for every Republican Candidate since 1864.
