8 May 1861 ---- 30 June 1929

The funeral services for Mrs. J. A. Smith, who suddenly died in her home in Goldfield on Sunday evening, June 30, were held at the M.E. Church on Wednesday afternoon. The funeral sermon was preached by her pastor, Rev. D. M. Simpson. The Misses Avis and Grace Claussen, with Mrs. Glenn Braden as pianist, furnished very appropriate hymn music. The beautiful floral offerings and the large and sympathetic number of people in attendance were evidence of the very high esteem in which Mrs. Smith was held. Relatives from out of town present at the funeral were: a son, Erman S. Smith and his wife and son from Borington, Illinois; two nephews: A. A. Smith and family from Eagle Grove and Mr. Albert Nelson and family of Titonka, Iowa.

Caroline A. Neilson Smith was born in Langland, Denmark, May 8, 1861 and departed this life from her home in Goldfield, Iowa at 7:30 o'clock on Sunday evening June 30. Miss Neilson came alone to America at the age of 19.

In October 1882, Mr. J. A. [James Albert] Smith and Miss Caroline Neilson were united in marriage in Eagle Grove. Immediately following their marriage, they located on what is now known as the "Smith Farm," four and a half miles southwest of Goldfield.

The husband and five children survive: Sophia J. Nervig, Warren H. and Marcia R., all of Goldfield; Julia A. Warner of Page, North Dakota; and Erman S. Smith of Barrington, Illinois. There are also living, eighteen grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Mrs. Smith has been a faithful member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for 40 years. She was converted by the preaching of Elder Black who later became "Presiding Elder" of Algona District. Mr. and Mrs. Smith transferred their church membership to Goldfield in 1924. Mrs. Smith was a member of the following named church organizations and was a dependable worker therein: Dorcas Society, W.H.M.S. and W.C.T.U. During the last three years her health was serious impaired. Always a patient sufferer, Mrs. Smith most thoroughly "set her house in order" in anticipation of her sudden departure. Would you know Mrs. Smith? As conserving her of any of the multitude whom she served, and for whom she sacrificed. She fed the hungry, visited the sick, and was restless unless serving someone.

Mrs. Smith was devised the advantages of the schools, but by diligence and ceaseless application, gained the rudiments of an education. She was truly cultured, her life exemplifying the character of God. The sorrowful family have the sympathy of their many friends.
