August 10, 1825 --- September 3, 1901

John L . Middleton died at his home in this city Tuesday morning after but a few days of serious illness.

"Uncle John" as he was familiarly known to all was born Aug 10, 1825 in Maryland. At an early age his parents moved to Ohio where he grew to manhood and in 1855 came to Wright County, Ia where he has lived until his death and was one of the first residents of Troy township. He was a blacksmith by trade and an ingenious mechanic in many ways. He leaves an aged wife, five children, two sons and three daughters, Allen, John W., Mrs. Nels Sleiku, [Slaikeu] Mrs. Ed Gunderson and Miss Mima.

"Uncle John" has been a prominent figure upon our streets for many years and will be missed by all. The sympathy of the community is extended to the sorrowing friends. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church, Rev. Southwell preached the sermon. A large procession followed the remains to Troy cemetery for burial.
