CHAMPAIGN, IL – Norma Mae Smith, 77, of Champaign passed away at 3:20 a.m. Wednesday (July 30, 2014) at Heartland Health Care Center, Champaign. A private service will be held at a later date.
Mrs. Smith was born Aug. 15, 1936, in Dows, Iowa, to parents Joe and Caroline (Brinkman) Jackson. She married Richard Smith on Aug. 22, 1957. He preceded her in death on May 5, 2005. Survivors include daughter Carolyn Koss (Jim) of Champaign; granddaughters, Stephanie Frankel (Charlie) and Wendy Koss (Brad); great-grandson, Sam; and six nieces and nephews. Norma was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Lois Ingram.
Mrs. Smith worked for more than 30 years at the Pepsi Co. Bottling Plant as the only female in the line crew. She collected Pepsi memorabilia, enjoyed watching her favorite driver, Jeff Gordon, in NASCAR, and was a fan of Illinois basketball and football. Norma will be remembered as a feisty woman who earned her way in life. She loved her family and cherished her time with her grandchildren.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Doris Schmidt and Bruce Smith for being such wonderful friends to Norma. She loved them like family. Memorial contributions may be made to the Harbor Lights Hospice organization.
