Howard Alan Johnson, was born October 23, 1940, at the home of his parents, Gerhard and Anna Mae (Aldrich) Johnson, in Belmond, Iowa. He was baptized on May 11, 1941, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond, and confirmed there on May 29, 1954. Howard graduated from Belmond High School in 1959. He served his country in the United States Army National Guard for two years, was honorably discharged, enlisted in the United States Navy, served four years and was honorably discharged.

In 1962, Howard married Karen Dohrmann. They had three children: Rebecca, Shawn, and Eric. They later divorced. In 1973, he married Sandra Weiner and they had two children: Michelle and Michael.

Howard was employed by Northwestern Bell/US West for 25 years, retiring as a Computer Programmer in 1990. He was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, at Honey Creek, Iowa. Howard lived life to the fullest. He loved to play Cribbage - once even scoring a "29" hand. He also loved to play Wahoo, Pitch, and Sequence. He also enjoyed fishing, making latch hook rugs, reading Western books, and watching John Wayne movies. Howard went home to be with his Lord on August 14, 2014, after battling emphysema and colon/liver cancer. He treasured his faith and his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Donna Jean Kennedy; brother-in-law, David Kennedy; brother, Calvin (Bud) Johnson; son, Eric; and father-in-law, Merlin Weiner. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Sandra; and children and grandchildren, Rebecca (Dennis) Tanner, of Fontanelle, Iowa and their sons, Kyle (friend Jesi) and Justin (friend Peyton); Shawn (Jason) Holtgrewe, of Newell, Iowa and their children, Kayla and Cody; Eric's children, Seth and Sydnee, of Carmel, N.Y.; Michelle (Neal) Binkley, of St. Petersburg, Fla., and their sons, Collins and Jaxson; Michael Johnson, of Crescent, Iowa and his daughter, Chloe; mother-in-law, Shirley Weiner of Sauk Centre, Minn., brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Randy and Patricia Turner, of Sauk Centre, Minn., and Terry Reznicek and Barbara Weiner, of St. Croix Falls, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation Sunday, August 17, 2014 -- 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., followed by funeral service at 4 p.m., all at St. John's Lutheran Church in Honey Creek, Iowa. Interment Grange Cemetery, Honey Creek. Luncheon will follow back at church. Memorials are suggested to St. John's Lutheran Church and Hospice of Southwest Iowa.
