Ruth J. Fox, 105, 1037 Weston Avenue, Wausau, passed away peacefully August 9, 2014, at Primrose Retirement Community, Wausau, Wisconsin under the care of the Primrose Staff and Interim Health Care Hospice & Palliative Care.
She was born March 15, 1909, to the late Harvey G. and Jessie I. Houck, in Vincent, Iowa, one of seven siblings all preceding her in death. Ruth grew up in Fort Dodge, Iowa. She married Frederick Fox on July 16, 1938, in the "Little Brown Church in the Vale", in Nashua, Iowa. He preceded her in death February 12, 1991. Ruth graduated from the Chicago Normal School of Physical Education and moved to Wausau to teach. She taught Girls Physical Education at the old Wausau Junior High School facility in downtown Wausau and later at the Horace Mann School. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
She was a Hospital Volunteer all during her retirement years and received an honorary membership in the volunteers association. She was a member of the Wausau Country Club and one of the first women members of the Wausau Curling Club. In 1995, she was presented with a green jacket and honored with a lifetime membership in the Curling Club. Ruth was a firm believer in exercise and attended swim aerobic classes at the YMCA into her nineties. She was an avid skier, both downhill and cross country, and spent many days at Rib Mountain Ski Area (Granite Peak) and Nine Mile Cross Country Center. She loved to travel in this country and abroad. Thailand and Egypt were two of her favorite overseas trips. Colorado was her second home! Ruth thoroughly enjoyed her family and friends, picnics, family reunions and many scenic drives in the beautiful Wisconsin State Parks surrounding Wausau.
Ruth is survived by two sons, Frederick (Debra) of Aurora, Colorado, and Charles (Susan) of Centennial, Colorado, two granddaughters, Catherine (Katie) and Lisa Bennett, two grandsons, Jason and Brian and twin great grand children, Kalyn and Ryan Bennett, all who reside in the Denver, Colorado, metro area.
Details of a Memorial Service will be announced at a later date.
