December 8, 1826 --- March 4, 1918

In the death of Mr. C. F. Whittier, this section loses its oldest inhabitant and a fine, well-preserved old gentleman besides. He came to Garland some seven or eight years ago, to live with his daughter, Mrs. J. T. Edwards, at whose home his death occurred last Monday. He was exceptionally well-informed and an interesting talker on subjects connected with the earlier history of our country. His obituary follows:

Cyrus Francis Whittier was born in Sutton, New Hampshire, December 8, 1826. He was a close relative of the noted poet, John Greenleaf Whittier. The first 27 years of his life was spent in the state of New Hampshire and Vermont. He was united in marriage to Miss Susannah M. Fellows, October 9, 1851. Two children were born to them, but two survive: Mrs. J. L. Edwards and Frank Whittier, who lives at Eagle Grove, Iowa. The moved to Wisconsin in 1851, and to Iowa in 1883. Mrs. Whittier died July 31, 1887. The deceased became a member of the 2nd Adventist church in his youth.

He was a man of unusual strength; after he had lived the allotted three-score and ten, he was able to do more than ordinary men of younger years. About seven years ago declining health and the weight of years caused him to come to Wyoming to spend his remaining days with his daughter. The past week he suffered much until he departed this life, Monday, March 4, 1918, aged 91 years, 2 months and 6 days.
