Samuel R Bruce, 73, Dies; Rites Wednesday
Former Phone Manager Dies Suddenly

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 pm Wednesday from the Congregational church here for Samuel Robert Bruce, 73, retired manager of the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company here who died suddenly of a heart ailment at his home at 512 Stevens street Saturday afternoon. The Rev. Preston Hinderks will be in charge of services and burial will be in Union cemetery here.

Mr. Bruce was born in Hampton on Sept 18, 1885, the son of Mr and Mrs. Robert Bruce. He was married on Aug 21, 1909 to Miss Josephine Espey in Eagle Grove, where the couple made their home. Mr. Bruce later served with the telephone company in Keokuk and Burlington before coming to Iowa Falls, where he had resided for the past 45 years. Mr. Bruce retired as manager of the telephone company here in 1946 after 40 years of service with the company. He was keenly interested in community affairs and was a member of various orders of the Masonic lodge, the Congregational church, the Elks club, the Highland Golf club, the Rotary club and was a past member of the city park board. He was also a member of the Iowa Falls Public Library board at the time of his death. In recent years, up until this year, Mr. Bruce had served as Iowa Falls city assessor and was a prominent member of the city's 'senior golfers' group.

Mr. Bruce was preceded in death by his wife, but is survived by two sons, Richard Bruce of Des Moines and James Bruce of Grinnell. Other survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Eva Angel and Mrs. Anita Nelson, both of Des Moines, and Mrs. Joeyetta Wright of Deer Park, Wash., and two brothers, Charles Bruce of Mason City and John Bruce of Des Moines.
