Bertha May Gates, mother of a Brown County resident, died Tuesday, February 4, 2003. She was 87. Mrs. Gates was born in Eagle Grove, Iowa, on March 19, 1915. She was the daughter of Clement Otto and Huldah Ellen Jones Taflinger. She married Carl L. Gates on February 19, 1932. Ms. Gates grew up near Hoopston, Illinois, and Williamsport, but she lived most of her life in Columbus. She was a homemaker and attended Free Methodist Church. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, flowers and gardening. Survivors include daughters, Martha G. Colson, Brown County, and Sarah G. Campbell, of Nashville, Tennessee; sons, Joseph H. Gates, of Mulberry Grove, Illinois, and James W. and John C. Gates, both of Columbus; grandchildren, Laura Hendren, Daniel Colson, Carla Hatton, Daniel Colson, Carla Hatton, Ralph, Allen and Kevin Gates, SuAnna Hammond, Penny McCort and Thomas and Kathleen Campbell; and eight great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held on Saturday, February 8, at Vernon Jewell-Nick Rittman Funeral Home with the Reverend Chet Martin officiating. Burial was held at Garland Brook Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to American Heart Association or Alzheimer's Association.

Bertha May Gates, 87, of Beatty Street died at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, at Silver Oaks Health Campus. Mrs. Gates lived her early life near Hoopston, Ill., and Williamsport but lived most of her life in Columbus. She was a homemaker, attended Free Methodist Church and enjoyed quilting and sewing, flowers and gardening. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Vernon Jewell-Nick Rittman Funeral Home with the Rev. Chet Martin officiating. Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 9:30 a.m. until service time Saturday. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery. Memorials may be made to American Heart Association or Alzheimer's Association.

Mrs. Gates was born in Eagle Grove, Iowa, March 19, 1915, the daughter of Clement Otto and Huldah Ellen Jones Taflinger. She married Carl L. Gates Feb. 19, 1932. She is survived by sons, Joseph H. Gates of Mulberry Grove, Ill., and James W. and John C. Gates, both of Columbus; daughters, Martha G. Colson of Brown County and Sarah G. Campbell of Nashville, Tenn.; grandchildren, Laura Hendren, Daniel Colson, Carla Hatton, Ralph, Allen and Kevin Gates, SuAnna Hammond, Penny McCort and Thomas and Kathleen Campbell; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on Nov. 27, 1994; two infant children; brothers, Otto, George, Paul, Lawrence, Burnie and Richard Taflinger; and sisters, Helen and Burnice Taflinger.
