January 5, 1870 -- October 15, 1899

A sad and sudden death took place at Eagle Grove on Sunday and one of Boone's fairest and most popular young women had passed to eternity, Mrs. C. H. Bowen, nee Miss Thirza Hull, a daughter of Mrs. John A. Hull of this city and sister of J. A. Hull, the lawyer, was the victim. On Saturday a child was born but lived only a short time. The mother's condition became precarious and she passed away at 11 o'clock Sunday morning.

Mrs. Bowen was born in Boonsboro on January 5, 1870. Her early girlhood was spent at her father's elegant home east of the city. She received her education in the Boone schools and graduated with the class of 1887. Later she acted in the capacity of reporter for the Daily News and stenographer for T. W. Carpenter. On June 1, 1898 Miss Hull was united in marriage to C. H. Bowen formerly a resident of this city and superintendent of the engineering department of Eagle Grove. She removed to that city with her husband and resided there until the time of her death. The remains were brought to this city and the funeral services held at the First Presbyterian church at 1:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. A large attendance of her old friends were present. Rev. Scott Smith of Oskaloosa, former pastor here preached the funeral sermon. The remains were laid to rest in Linwood. Mrs. Bowen was a woman of keen intellect and popular with a large circle of acquaintances. She will be missed by the community. Mrs. Alice Leib of Oberlin, Kansas was in attendance at the funeral.
