November 7, 1865 --- April 18, 1950

Mrs. Sarah Ann Thompson, daughter of the late Eilert and Siri Watney, was born in LaSalle County, Ill., on November 7, 1865 and passed away at a rest home in Eagle Grove, Iowa, on Tuesday morning, April 18, 1950, at the age of 84 years, 5 months and 10 days. She came to this community with her parents as an infant and has made her home here ever since, with the exception of 12 years, 1932 to 1944, when she made her home with her son, the late Dr. Paul Thompson in Forest City. She was baptized in Illinois and confirmed in the fall of 1879 by Rev. Ingvald Eisteinsen.

On March 6, 1886, she was united in marriage to Henry Thompson at the Salem Lutheran parsonage by Rev. C. C. Holter. Her husband passed away September 11, 1948 and was over 89 years old at that time.

Mrs. Thompson is survived by one step-daughter, Mrs. Amanda Severson of North Long Beach, Calif, and four sons, Elliott and Cyrus of Roland, and Milton and Irven of Story City. Also 17 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. One son, Dr. Paul Thompson, one step-daughter, Mrs. Emma Quam, two sisters, Mrs. Christina Twedt and Miss Sophie Watney, and one brother, Charles Watney, preceded her in death.

Mr. and Mrs. Thompson lived on the old homestead one mile south of Roland until 1916, when they moved into their newly built home in Roland. Mrs. Thompson had been a patient in a nursing home in Eagle Grove for seven months and previous to that was a patient at the hospital in Jewell for about a year. She was a lifelong member of the Salem Lutheran church, and an active member of the Ladies Aid Society.

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the Erickson Funeral Home, and at Salem Lutheran church, with Rev. Olaf Holen in charge. Special music consisted of a solo by O.S. Boyd at the funeral home, and solos by Mr. Boyd and Otto J. Hanson at the church. Pall bearers were Oscar E. Twedt, C.E. Rod, T. I. Sampson, Jacob Erickson, M. O. Rod and Phillip H. Martens. Burial was made in the Roland cemetery.

Among those from a distance in attendance at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Luvern Quam, Mrs. Tom Robinson, Miss Betty Thompson, Marlon Prescott of Des Moines; Miss Pauline Thompson of Ames; Josiah Twedt, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Watney, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Clauson of Forest CIty; Jack Knudtson, Mrs. Phyllis Rhyn, D.D. Rhyn, Mrs. Curtis Campbell, of Marshalltown; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Rasmusson, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Rasmusson, Mrs. Lindly Wogen, Mandus Lund, of Legrand; Mrs. Aaswig, Mrs. Quickmore, of Eagle Grove; besides a large number from nearby communities.
