July 28, 1921 -- October 30, 1976

Robert Allen Van Houten, the son of Philip and Vivian Boots Van Houten, was born July 28, 1921, at Hampton, Iowa. He graduated from the Hansell school. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in physical education and social studies from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and his Masters degree in administration from the University of Iowa in Iowa City. During World War II he served in the Merchant Marines and the Army Military Police. One June 15, 1948 he married Jeannette Emalyn Vaughan at the Wesley Methodist Church in Mason City. He taught three years in the Renwick schools before coming to Eagle Grove in 1951. He retired in 1976 because of illness.

Robert died Saturday, October 30 at the Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park, Minn., at the age of 55 years, three months and two days. Survivors include his wife, Jeannette; one son, Bruce, St. Louis Park, Minn.;, one brother, James Van Houten, Hampton; and one sister, Helen Van Houten, Hampton. He was preceded in death by his parents. He was a member of the Methodist Church, Iowa State Education Association, National Education Association, the Lions Club, and the 733 Investors Club. Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 3, 1976 at 1:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, Eagle Grove. Rev. Donald Glazier officiated and burial was in the Hampton Cemetery, Hampton.
