Robert A. Mathieu was born on October 3, 1909, the son of Louis and Marie Mathieu, in Eagle Grove, Iowa. He received his education in the Sacred Heart Catholic School in Eagle Grove, Iowa. He graduated Valedictorian of his senior class. He was united in marriage to Catherine Conroy on November 28, 1936, at St. Joseph's Parish in Jefferson. He was employed with the Salada Centennial Tea Company in Chicago, Ill., before moving back to Iowa in 1941. In 1946, he moved back to Eagle Grove and operated his own business for over 50 years. When needed, he also worked as a substitute rural mail carrier in Eagle Grove. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eagle Grove. Robert A. Mathieu died at the Rotary Ann Nursing Home in Eagle Grove on Tuesday, August 29, 1995. He had attained the age of 85 years, 10 months, and 26 days.

Survivors include his wife, Catherine of Eagle Grove; sons, Michael of Minneapolis, Minn., Robert of Des Moines, Gregory of Iowa City, Harlan of New York City, and Mark of Los Angeles, Calif.; daughter, Catherine of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 16 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, Louis, Paul (P J.), and Rene; and 3 sisters, Gabriel, Marjorie Jones and Gertrude Workman.

Memorial services for Robert A. Mathieu were held on Saturday, September 2, 1995, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eagle Grove. Burial will be at a later date. Willim Funeral Home, Ltd., of Eagle Grove was in charge of arrangements.
