Catherine E. Conroy was born June 7, 1912 to James and Anna (Kleimeier) Conroy at Jefferson, Iowa, where her family farmed northeast of Jefferson. She attended high school at a boarding school in Pocahontas before she attended Mount St. Clare College in Clinton where she graduated in 1931 and received her teaching certificate. She taught in a one room rural country school for five years near Jefferson until she was united in marriage on November 28, 1936 to Robert A. Mathieu at St. Joseph's Parish in Jefferson. They moved to Chicago, Ill. after they were married. In 1942 they moved back to Iowa where they lived in Fort Dodge before moving to Eagle Grove in 1946. She worked as a substitute teacher at the Sacred Heart Parochial School in Eagle Grove where she was also a tutor for students. Catherine is a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eagle Grove where she was involved in church and school activities.

Catherine E. Mathieu, 85, of Eagle Grove, died Wednesday, July 30, 1997 at the Trinity Regional Hospital in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Survivors include her sons, Michael of Minneapolis, Minn.; Robert and his wife Connie of Des Moines; daughter, Catherine Chebular and her husband Michael of Colorado Springs, Colo.; sons Mark of Los Angeles, Calif., Gregory of Iowa City, Iowa, Harlan of New York City, New York; 13 grandchildren, five great grandchildren; brothers, Harold Conroy and his wife Margaret of Jefferson and Bernard Conroy and his wife Frances of Altamonte Springs, Fla. and sisters, Mercedes Stedman of Fort Dodge, Iowa; Dorothy Mathieu of Lombard, Ill.; and Shirley Thissen of Hendersonville, N.C. She was preceded in death by her husband on August 28,1995.

Memorial services for Catherine E. Mathieu, 85, were held Monday, Aug. 4, 1997 at 10:30 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eagle Grove with the Rev. Wayne Droessler and the Rev. David Wright officiating. There was no visitation. The body has been donated to the University of Osteopathic medicine and Health Sciences in Des Moines.
