April 4, 1941 --- June 17, 2014

WEBSTER CITY - Delores Smotherman, age 73, of Webster City passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames after a courageous battle with metastatic breast cancer. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 21, 2014 at the United Church of Christ in Jewell with Rev. Bob Miller officiating. Burial will follow at the Saratoga Cemetery north of Stanhope after a time of fellowship at the church. Visitation will be at the United Church of Christ in Jewell on Friday from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Memorials may be given to Homeward Hospice of Ames or to the family to use at their discretion. Becker Funeral Home in Jewell is caring for Delores and her family.

Delores Caroline Hagen was born April 4, 1941 in Algona to Oscar and Martha (Frost) Hagen. She was baptized and confirmed at the St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Bode, Iowa. She graduated from Twin Rivers High School in Bode in 1959 and then attended the Fort Dodge Beauty Academy. She married Jerry Knight on January 1, 1963 in Goldfield, Iowa and they had a son, Travis. She then married Lucky Smotherman on January 13, 1973 in Jewell and they had a son, Troy. She worked as a beautician for over 53 years in Humboldt, Clarion, Goldfield, Jewell, and Webster City until her illness. She loved her work and had no plans to retire. Her "ladies" were very special to her and she was sure to end each appointment with her trademark "you're lovely". She devoted her personal life to raising her sons, being a dedicated farm wife, and spending time with special friends. She was a member of the United Church of Christ in Jewell and served as president of the Women's Fellowship, and she was a member of the Red Hat Club.

Delores is survived by her husband, Lucky Smotherman of Webster City; sons, Travis (Peggi) Knight of Slater and Troy (Heide) Smotherman of Rose Bud, Arkansas; granddaughters, Sydney and Sierra Knight of Slater; sisters, Elaine Schulze, Marlene Olsen, and Marcia (Stewart) Skaar; brothers, Orville (Linda) Hagen, Orland (Patricia) Hagen, Jewell (Julie) Hagen, and Roger (Trudy) Hagen; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lucky's parents, and an infant grandson, Christian Jacob Knight.
