May 26, 1944 --- May 15, 2014

MESERVEY, IA -- Lloyd W. Suntken, 69, of Meservey lost his battle with lung cancer on May 15, 2014, at his home. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 19, at the First Reformed Church in Meservey, with the Rev. Rodney Meester officiating. A time of fellowship will be held after the service in the church basement. There will be no graveside services.

Lloyd Suntken, the son of Harm and Ruth (Dorenkamp) Suntken, was born May 26, 1944. He graduated from Meservey High School in 1962. He served in the Army Reserves for four years. He was married on July 27, 1968, to Patricia (Pat) Stadtlander at the First Reformed Church in Meservey. He worked with his uncle as a carpenter; later in a fertilizer plant, did custom farming and a salesman for a grain company. His greatest love was building things and he often made things for his family. He owned his own construction business and continued to work until he became ill. Lloyd was a volunteer fireman for many years, participating in water ball tournaments with area fire departments and was a member of the town council and school board.

He played fastpitch softball when he was younger, fished whenever he could, both ice and regular fishing. There was always some bait in the refrigerator in the garage, waiting to catch that big walleye, perch or bluegill. He also loved to golf, entering many tournaments with family and friends and loved to play pinochle for “bragging rights” with his retired friends in Thornton. The weather didn’t cooperate this spring and he didn’t get a chance to plant his beloved sweet potatoes, squash and cucumbers.

He loved his family, especially his five grandchildren, and liked to tease them and teach them how to fish. He loved giving the nurses at the Cancer Center in Mason City a hard time and they learned to give it back to him. He always had some funny joke or words of wisdom to share with them. We will all miss his laughter and smile even though there was very little of that during the last few months of his illness. He fought a mighty battle but he became too weary to continue the fight.

He is survived by his wife Pat; daughter Anjanette (Adam) Bills and their boys Peyton and Mason of Dodge Center, Minnesota; son Darin (Erin) Suntken and their children Alexandra, Sage and Dax of Sheffield; one brother, Fred (Sandra) Suntken of Meservey; two sisters, Bonnie Brunstein of Meservey and Rosalie Hartwig of Thornton. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harm and Ruth Suntken, and one brother, Lawrence Suntken of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Retz Funeral Home.
