Ruby Maxine (Rhoads) Carlson was born in rural Hancock, County on July 24, 1935, to Gilbert W. and Emma P. (Hartwig) Rhoads. She attended country school and Hayfield Consolidated School and graduated in 1953 from Kanawha High School. On August 1, 1953, Ruby married Floyd H. Carlson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They raised their family in Cresco, Mason City, Spirit Lake, and Bancroft. Ruby worked as a switchboard operator at Mercy Hospital in Mason City and along with her husband owned and operated bars in Spirit Lake and Bancroft. Ruby enjoyed traveling with Floyd delivering loads in his semi. She also enjoyed bowling, crocheting, and being with her family and friends.

Ruby M. Carlson died Thursday, May 22, 2014 at the Heritage Nursing Home in Bancroft at the age of 78. She had been a resident there since April, 2011. She is survived by a son, Mike (Shelly) Carlson of Frost, MN; three daughters, Rhonda (Mike) Nemmers, Donna Kayser, and Terri Carlson all of Bancroft. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Robert Miller of Garner; three sisters-in-law, Margaret Anderson of Kanawha, Dorothy Carlson of Mason City, and Marion Carlson of Cottage Grove, WI; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents; her husband Floyd in 1996; her sister, Betty Miller; her brother Harold Rhoads and his wife Gloria; a nephew, Rodney Jordanger; and an infant sister.
