Mary Jane (Hammond) Tilghman, the daughter of Jesse and Alealia (Fisher) Hammond, was born January 21, 1927, in East Peoria, Illinois. She was raised and educated in the area of her birth and moved to Eagle Grove with her family at age 15. She graduated from Eagle Grove High School in 1945. Mary Jane then attended Drake University and received her teaching degree. She taught country school, in Galt and third grade in Clarion, retiring after 34 years. On February 20, 1949, Mary Jane was united in marriage with Lyle G. Tilghman at the United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove. They lived near Goldfield, Hardy, Williams, Blairsburg, and in 1960 moved to Eagle Grove. Mary Jane was a member of the First Assembly of God Church and First Baptist Church. She enjoyed scrapbooking, Friday morning coffee, Bible study, and the companionship of her dog, Shadeaux.

Mary Jane passed away on Monday, May 5, 2014, at Van Diest Medical Center in Webster City, at the age of 87 years. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lyle on July 14, 1996, and three brothers, Bob (Thelma), Don, and Jesse Hammond. Survivors include her son, Dan Tilghman of Eagle Grove; sister, Sharon Owen of Marshalltown; sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Hammond of Cedar Rapids, and Maria Hammond of Omaha, Neb.; brother-in-law, Robert Tilghman of Little Canada, Minn.; and many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 12, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Eagle Grove with Pastor Dr. Fran Pettigrew officiating. Visitation will be Monday, from 12:00 pm until service time at the church. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family. Foust Funeral Home of Eagle Grove is in charge of arrangements.
