Former Wellsburg Businessman, Jack Fischer, Is Dead

Funeral services for John Lenton (Jack) Fischer, 77, retired Wellsburg hardware store owner, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Doyen Funeral Home with Rev. John H. Elenbaas officiating. Burial was in the Shiloh cemetery. Casket bearers were Robert Renken, Lee Huisman, Duane Greany, Eugene Huisman, Eldon Huisman and Ralph Huisman. Mrs. Leonard Gelder and Mrs. Harley Freese were flower attendants. Vocal selections were sung by Mrs. Harold Okones and Thomas Claassen. Mrs. Clarence Beecroft was organist and Mrs. Ray Toomsen pianist. Doyen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Fischer passed away around 3:15 Sunday afternoon at the Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo following a lingering illness. He had been taken to the hospital for treatment on May 2nd. He reached the age of 77 years, 9 months and 17 days.

He was born on July 22, 1893, on a farm near Belmond, the son of Albert and Mathilda (Collins) Fischer. The family later moved to Dows. He attended the Dows Public School. On October 30, 1916, he was united in marriage to Miss Grace Huisman at Clarion. They have lived all of their married life in Wellsburg. This union was blessed with one son and one daughter. They were privileged to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on October 30, 1966 with their family and friends. He owned and operated the Wellsburg Hardware Co. in Wellsburg for many years until he sold out in 1950 and retired.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, Earl, William and Alfred Fischer. Those left to mourn his passing are his wife, Grace; one son, Harold O. Fischer of Wellsburg; one daughter, Mildred, Mrs. Samuel G. Clifford of Evansville, Ind.; and 3 granddaughters and 2 grandsons.
