Representative O. B. Sherman, 65, Dies at Iowa City

O. B. Sherman, 65, longtime resident of Goldfield, passed away Friday afternoon at the State University hospital in Iowa City. Mr. Sherman has been in ill health for several years and was taken to the hospital on Sunday. Obediah Sherman, son of Daniel and Clara Sherman, was born at Somonauk, Ill., Feb. 27, 1887, and departed this life at the State University hospital in Iowa City at the age of 65 years, 11 months and 14 days. He was baptized in youth in the Christian church. At the age of thirteen he moved with his parents to a farm east of Goldfield. He was united in marriage October 25, 1907, to Kathryn May Beisell. Mr. Sherman and family moved to Minnesota in 1912 and spent seven years in the dragline business. In 1919 he moved to Texas and engaged in farming for three years. Mr. Sherman and family returned to Goldfield in 1922 where he spent the next 16 years as a John Deere mechanic. In 1938 he went to work for the town of Goldfield as pumpman and marshal until he was forced to resign in 1950 due to ill health. He was preceded in death by his parents, one grandson and one great-grandson. He is survived by his wife, one brother, Will, six children, Helen (Mrs. Merle Isles) of Effingham, Kan., Iris (Mrs. Arthur Haugland) of Jackson, Minn., Evelyn of Portland, Ore., Donald of Eagle Grove, Robert, Burton of Goldfield and 12 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 1:30 at the Kastler funeral home in Eagle Grove with Rev. M. L. Christensen officiating. Bearers were firemen Conger Whyte, Lee Jergenson, John Rod, Virgil Darland, Fred Schnell and Eugene Lewis. Mrs. Glen Braden presided at the organ with Mrs. Conger Whyte and Leonard Madison as vocalists. Interment was made in the family lot in the Glenwood cemetery in Goldfield.
