Last Rites Held For G. E. Bingham

The last rites for Mr. Bingham were held Friday afternoon in the Rowan Congregational church with Rev. Harold A. Sanders officiating. Bearers were Charles Kercheval, James Kercheval, Rex Steffens, John Howell, Ray Johansen, grandsons of the deceased, and George Pritchett, a nephew. Carl Pesch was the soloist, accompanied by Mrs. Howard Box. Interment was made in Graceland cemetery. Out of town relatives and friends who attended the funeral services of Edgar Bingham last Friday afternoon were Mr. and Mrs. James Kercheval, Cedar Falls; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kercheval and Johnny, Montezuma; Mrs. Lea Brinkman, Mankato, Minn.; Frank Fairley and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Fairley, Marion; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lary, Ft. Wayne, Ind.; Mr. and Mrs. Ray Johansen and three children, Latimer; Mr. and Mrs. John Howell, Mrs. Jane Smith and two daughters. Mrs. Ruth Bingham and Sharon and Charles Churchill of Clarion; Mr. and Mrs. Ray Williams, Madison, S. D.; Miss Marjorie Pritchett, Webster City; Mrs. Earl Benson, Robert Brooks, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Munnis, Mr. and Mrs. Myron Hill, Mrs. R. L. Campbell and Mrs. Elmer Breckenridge, Clarion, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Brooks and Mr. and Mrs. John Campbell, Belmond; E. W. Azeltine, Cedar Falls Mrs. Virgil Miller and J. J. McAlpine, Dows.

George Edgar Bingham, son of George and Caroline Bingham, was born in Cedar county, Jan. 10, 1857. He came with his parents to Wright county in 1853 and with them shared the experiences of pioneer days. Mr. Bingham attended the early schools of this community and shared in much of the experiences of the development of this area. On May 11. 1879, Mr. Bingham was married to Mary Jane Stidworthy in Apple River, Ill. After their marriage they returned to Iowa and farmed two miles southeast of Rowan. With the exception of a few months that they resided in Sioux City they spent their entire married life in and around Rowan. Mr. and Mrs. Bingham were the parents of four children. Carrie, William, Maude and Bessie. Both Mr. and Mrs. Bingham were charter members of the Rowan Congregational church and were always active in its work. Mr. Bingham held many of the different offices in the church and held the office of Sunday school superintendent for a period of 20 consecutive years. The honor and esteem his fellow members had for his Christian character and integrity was manifested in their electing him to the position of deacon emeritus several years ago. Mrs. Bingham preceded him in death in 1931 and since that time, with the exception of the past two years, he made his home with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Whitten in Rowan. He was also preceded in death by his daughter Bessie in 1937, four grandchildren and one great-grandson. Mr. Bingham passed away at the home of his daughter in Montezuma Monday evening, Mar. 30, at the age of 96 years, 2 months and 20 days. He is survived by his son, William of Rowan; two daughters, Mrs. Clint Kercheval of Montezuma, and Mrs. J. A. Whitten of Rowan; eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren.
