Katherine Alice Prehm, one of eight children, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Justin O. Prehm, July 22, 1889, in Eagle Grove. She attended the public schools of Eagle Grove and graduated from high school in 1907. She taught school one term and was for several years employed in the First National Bank. She and A. Howard Martin were united in marriage February 5, 1914, at Eagle Grove and have lived here since. Three children were born to this union, Ruth, Mrs. Charles Larson of Grand Rapids, Michigan; Reed of Dayton, Ohio; and Merle, recently discharged from the navy, now at home. As a child, Mrs. Martin attended the Congregational Sunday School and early united with the church. Through the years she has been very active in the life of the church, having held many offices. She was secretary of the board of trustees at the time of her death. She was a member of Eagle Grove chapter No. 114, Order of the Eastern Star and was Worthy Matron in 1938. She has been active in the ladies' auxiliary of the Order of Railway Conductors for many years and for the past twenty years has held office. She was president of the Equality Club for two years; and in other ways has been a cooperative worker in the life of this community.

After several months of illness, she passed from this life, at her home, July 30, 1946, at the age of fifty-seven years and eight days. She leaves besides her husband and children, a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Reed Martin, a son-in-law, Charles Larson; two grandchildren, Patricia Anne Martin and Katherine Larson; her mother, Mary Prehm of Eagle Grove; three brothers, Maurice Prehm of Eagle Grove, Ernest of Northwood, Iowa; and Chesney of Des Moines, Iowa; four sisters, Mrs. Bessie Holmquist of Chicago, Florence Prehm of Creston, Iowa, Hazel of Rochester, N. Y., and Helen of Mason City, Iowa; besides other relatives, and friends in other places as well as her many close friends of Eagle Grove.
