December 23, 1865 -- December 27, 1951

Mary Kirkeberg Prehm, oldest daughter in a family of thirteen children, was born near Humleberg in Norway, December 23, 1865. When a very young child she came to America with her parents, Michael and Maria Kirkeberg. The ocean voyage was made in thirteen weeks. The family first settled in Clayton county in eastern Iowa. In 1873 they moved by an oxen-drawn covered wagon to a farm in Humboldt county, 5 miles west of Eagle Grove. At the age of thirteen she was confirmed in the Lutheran church by Pastor Lund of Thor and remained a member of the church until her death. On September 3, 1885 she was united in marriage to Justin O. Prehm. To this union eight children were born, seven of whom are living. They are Mrs. Bess Holmquist and Maurice J. of Eagle Grove, Florence of Creston, Ernest of Jefferson, Hazel of White Plains, New York, Chesney and Mary Helen of Des Moines. Mrs. Prehm was preceded in death by her husband who passed away in 1937 and her daughter Catherine (Mrs. Howard Martin) in 1946. For the last year and a half Mrs. Prehm has made her home with her daughter Florence. She passed away Thursday, December 27, 1951 at Greater Community Hospital in Creston.

Besides her seven children she leaves to mourn her loss, one sister Mrs. H. C. [Dena] Olson of Bode, one brother John Kirk of Chula Vista, Calif., five grandchildren and four great grandchildren, and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday afternoon at the Kastler Funeral home. Rev. Kenneth Torvik officiated. Music was furnished by Miss Wilma Tokheim, soloist, with Miss Helen Dahlberg accompanist. Casket bearers were Carl Gise [Geis], Howard Martin, A. B. Parsons, Frank Tanner, C. T. Mickelson and Kenneth Mickelson. Burial was in Rose Hill cemetery.
