His early boyhood was spent near Springfield, Ill. When about 17 years of age his parents moved to Traer, Iowa, where they lived for a short time. Then they moved to Lisbon, Iowa, where the father taught school. Several years later the family removed to Eagle Grove where the father published the Eagle Grove Times, the first newspaper in this city. Since that time, Eagle Grove had been the home of Mr. Prehm.

On Sept. 3, 1885, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Kirkeberg. To this union wee born eight children, all of whom are living. They are: Mrs. Bess Holmquist, Chicago, Ill.; Maurice and Mrs. Kate Prehm [Martin] of Eagle Grove; Florence of Creston; Ernest of Northwood; Hazel of Waterloo; Chesney of Griswold and Mary Helen of Mason City.

For a number of years he was inspector of the water supply on the C. & N. W. railroad. In 1900 he became custodian of the West Side schools of Eagle Grove and with the exception of a few months in 1916, he had continued in that position until the time of his death. Several generations of teachers and school children knew of him affectionately as 'Dad' Prehm. He was baptized and received into the membership of the Eagle Grove Congregational church, June 9, 1895. He also was a member of the A. O. U. W.

Besides the widow and eight children, he leaves to mourn their loss, one surviving sister, Mrs. Charles Terry, editor of Klamath Free Press of Klamath Falls, Oregon; four grandchildren..., numerous nephews and nieces, and many other relatives.
