September 22, 1930 ---- January 6, 2014

John E. (Sonny) Erickson, 83, of Fort Dodge, passed away Monday, January 6, 2014 at his home. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 11, 2014 in the chapel of the Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral with Rev. Darryl Landsverk, Pastor, Badger Lutheran Church, officiating. A visitation will from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday January 10, at the funeral home. Burial will be held at a later date, Blossom Hill Cemetery, Badger.

Survivors include his sons, John Erickson Jr. of Omaha, NE; and Daniel Erickson of Columbia City, OR; daughters, Deborah Simmons of Walters, OK; Elizabeth Shearin of Manteo, NC; and Patricia Erickson of Savannah, GA; sisters, Violet Carlson of Plymouth, MN; Marilyn Keck of Colorado Springs, CO; Bonnie Erpelding of Wesley, IA; and Barbara Muklebust of Highlands Ranch, CO; brothers, Gary Erickson of Fort Dodge, IA; Vernon Erickson of Clayton, NC; David Erickson of Creedmoor, NC; and Brian Erickson; four grandchildren; four step-grandchildren, three great grandchildren, ten step great grandchildren, one step great great granddaughter and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Orville and Sylvia (Larson) Erickson and his grandson Jared Erickson.

John Edward Erickson was born on September 22, 1930 in rural Webster County. He was raised on a farm near Thor and Badger where he attended rural schools. John then joined the United States Army and was stationed in Japan during the Korean War in 1951. He was discharged in 1953 when he returned and farmed until he moved to Council Bluffs in 1973. While living in Council Bluffs, he worked as a meat cutter in Underwood, IA. In 1976, Sonny moved back to Fort Dodge and worked at Iowa Beef. He also worked for Pinkerton Security Service from 1985 1993 and continued working there part time until 2010. He was baptized at the Lutheran church in Badger and was a member of the V.F.W. Memorials may be left to The Lutheran Hour or to Lutheran World Relief.
