October 23, 1923 --- January 8, 2014

Eugene "Gene" Pingel, 90, of Webster City, formerly of Vincent, died January 8, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Monday, January 13, 2014 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the Rev. David Grindberg officiating. Interment and full military honors will be held in Newark Township Cemetery, Vincent. Visitation will be held Sunday from 3:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services.

Eugene F. Pingel, the son of Frank and Margaret (Carroll) Pingel, was born October 23, 1923 on a farm east of Fort Dodge. He attended local schools and graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High School in 1941. After graduation he farmed with his father. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II on the island of Leyte in the Pacific and in Japan. Following his service he returned to the Vincent area and continued to farm. On October 5, 1947 he married Mildred Lund and they made their home on a farm north of Vincent. In 1963 they moved to Vincent where he was employed by the Vincent Lumber Company. He later became co-owner of the lumber company and retired in 1985. Gene was a volunteer on the Vincent Fire Department where he served as an EMT for many years and a member of the Vincent Lions. He was a long time member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church where he served on the church council, property committee and was a member of the St. Olaf Oles. He enjoyed wood working and spending time with his family. He was privileged to travel to Washington D.C. in 2010 on the Brushy Creek Area Honor Flight.

Gene is survived by his daughters, Mary (Kenny) Kruger of Webster City; and Sue (Doug) Seltz of Clare; grandchildren, Kraig (Steph) Kruger, Larissa Anderson, Kara (Ben) Walstrom, Megan (Dave) Ruzicka and Rachel Seltz and 7 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Mildred, his parents and his sisters Dorothy Lynn and Margaret Lynn. Memorials may be directed towards St. Olaf Lutheran Church.
