Gary Linn Hefty was born July 25, 1944, in Humboldt, Iowa, the son of Henry and Mildred (Rummens) Hefty. He grew up on the family farm and attended the Vernon Consolidated School. After his schooling he entered the military and served his country in the United States Army. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army he moved back to the LuVerne area where he began farming. In 1968, Gary was united in marriage to Barbara Hatcher at the United Methodist Church in Humboldt. To this union two children were born. The couple later divorced. In the early 1980's Gary moved to Des Moines area, lived in Ankeny for a while and eventually settled in De Soto, Iowa. Gary enjoyed fishing, gardening and taking care of his many Border Collies. Gary died Tuesday, November 26, 2013, at his home in De Soto, Iowa, at the age of 69.

Left to cherish his memory is his children, Chad Hefty and wife Kim of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Kimberlee and husband Mathieu Streiff of Newport Beach, California; grandchildren, Garinger Hefty, Grayson Baker, Jackie Baker, Courtney Baker, Dylan Streiff, Rhone Streiff and Elize "Raine" Streiff. Also surviving is his longtime companion, Ann Hegstrom of De Soto and siblings, Henry and Laurine Hefty of LuVerne; Betty Billings of Kansas City, Missouri; Alma Chatman of Las Vegas, Nevada; Merrill and Judy Hefty of West Bend; Ben and Kay Hefty of LuVerne; Eunice and Dennis Albright of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Angel Hefty, a sister, Lela Hefty and a brother, Bud Hefty.
