Robert J. Balk, 76, died November 18, 2013 at his home in Goodell. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, November 29 at Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner with Fr. Dennis Miller officiating. Visitation will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday at the funeral chapel.

Robert Joseph, the son of Urich "Ole" and Rose (Weinfurter) Balk, was born May 24, 1937 at Lawler. On January 27, 1962 he married Ann Melver at Schley. They lived at Schley, Osage, and in 1975 moved to Klemme. In 1978 they moved to Goodell. Robert was employed at McLaughlin Brothers Chevrolet in Belmond as a body and paint technician, but due to respiratory problems he then detailed cars until he retired in 2005 after 27 years. In his retirement he enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and going to threshing and steam engine shows.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Ann in February 2011; and siblings Julius, Walter, Arthur, Alma, Leona, Reuben and Rita. Bob is survived by his children Donna (Craig) Diekhuis of Mason City and LaVanda (Bruce) Bergeson of Towanda, KS; grandchildren Michele (Dean) Simkins and Dylan Bergeson; brothers Floyd, Francis and Ronald Balk; and sister Patty Melver.
