BELMOND -- Marjorie Slining, 86, beloved wife and mother, passed away on November 23, 2013, at Iowa Specialty Hospital, Belmond, with her family in attendance.

Marjorie Pals was born on June 13, 1927, the third child and only daughter of Harm L and Grace Meinders Pals of Palsville. She graduated from country school in rural Belmond. She was a baptized member of and attended Immanuel Reformed Church all of her life. She will be buried in the Immanuel Cemetery next to her husband. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Immanuel Reformed Church, 3157 130th St., Belmond. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Andrews Funeral Home, 516 First St. S.E., Belmond, and continue one hour prior to funeral services at the church Saturday.

Marjorie was united in marriage to Duane A Slining on February 17, 1948. They started married life on a farm west of Belmond where Margo was born. They moved to Alexander in 1949 where Ruth, Darwin, and Dwight were born. In 1957 they moved to Dows where Mark, Dawn, and Darla were born. She enjoyed working on the farm and in her garden with her husband and children and spent countless hours preparing meals. Her children's friends were welcome for a meal, a night, or longer if they needed it. While graham cracker fluff was always prepared for special occasions, ice cream was the favorite family dessert and indeed she enjoyed it as her last meal.

The Blaine Friendship Club was a great source of community for her in Dows, as was the Kensington Club in Belmond when they moved to the Bel Aire Condos in December of 1982. Marjorie was the last original resident of the condos. After Duane retired and there was no longer the need to prepare great quantities of food for family and friends, she became a proofreader at PSI, a job she enjoyed not just for the work but also for the camaraderie of her co-workers.

In addition to her parents and brothers Lambert and Henry, she was preceded in death by her husband Duane in 1998, daughter Ruth in 1950, and son Dwight in 2013. She is survived by her daughter Margo of Belmond; son Darwin (Cathy) of Granger; son Mark of Dows; daughter Dawn of Boone; and daughter Darla (Doug) Schmit of Plymouth, Minn. Marjorie had nine grandchildren: Brad, Colby (Tashina), and Dustin (Mallory) Slining of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Cory (Kristy) Slining of Urbandale; Stephani (Troy) Manning of West Des Moines; Morgan Slining of Goldfield; Ryan, Kallie, and Connor Schmit of Plymouth, Minn. She was also blessed with nine great-grandchildren: Kylie, Taryn, Cooper, Coyer and Avelyn of South Dakota; Gus and Murphy of West Des Moines; Cooper and Kendyl of Urbandale. Left to celebrate her memory in addition to her children and grandchildren are sisters-in-law, Malinda Pals, Jo Kuester, and Martha Slining all of Belmond, Janet (Dick) Thornton of Story City, and Darlene of Silverton, Ore. Memorials can be made to the Belmond Ambulance Service or the charity of your choice. Andrews Funeral Home.
