ELMORE, MN - Sam Martin Orvick, age 96, of Elmore, Minn., passed on from this life on Monday, April 29, 2013. Sam was born Feb. 2, 1917, in Hardy, Iowa, into a Norwegian immigrant farm family, and grew up in the Lone Rock area knowing the value of sun, soil, and the respect of good farm ground. Sam spent almost all his life working the land with only a gap filled by his service to his country during World War II. Sam entered army basic training at Fort Lewis, Wash., and then was assigned to the survey unit of the First Infantry, which landed on Utah Beach the Sunday after D-Day. Sam was proud to have served in the military, yet most of those memories were not shared until late in life. Sam returned home from the war ready to start farming and begin his new life. While attending the wedding of a good friend and army buddy, Sam became quite taken with the bride's sister, Corrine Michaelson of Rake, Iowa. They married and raised four loving children dedicated to serving their Lord. Sam is remembered for his unwavering faith in His Savior, his devoted love for his children, and his dedicated stewardship to caring for the land. He loved tilling the soil, caring for his livestock, keeping up with his reading, praying for his grandchildren, and joyfully serving his congregation Shiloh Lutheran of Elmore, Minn.
As in life, he continues to lead the way into eternity for his surviving wife, Corrine Michaelson Orvick; daughter, Lark Orvick Moore and husband Fred of Steilacoom, Wash.; son, Michael Orvick of Belle Plaine, Minn.; daughter, Carol Orvick Larson and her husband David of Albert Lea, Minn.; son, Mark Orvick and wife Karoline Lewis of Minneapolis. Sam's love also continues to sustain his grandchildren, Fred Moore, Jr. and Leischen Moore of Tacoma, Wash., Peter, Grace and Andrew Orvick of Chaska, Minn., Alexandra Larson Groten along with his new grandson-in-law, Joel Groten, and Jade Larson, Sigurd and Stellan Orvick all of Minneapolis, Minn.; nieces, Marvel M Jones-Titone and Gretchen Daniels; as well as many more dear family members.
Sam's sending home celebration will be 10 a.m. Friday, May 3, at Shiloh Lutheran in Elmore. Memorials may be designated toward the new bell tower at Shiloh, a dream shared by Sam and Corrine for many years. Sam remains in our hearts forever and in God's hands for all eternity.
