April 15, 1864 --- June 8, 1948

Mrs. Belle Winter

One of the few remaining pioneer woman. Mrs. John Winter, passed away at her home north of Hardy. Tuesday evening, June 8. at 9:30 o'clock. Her advanced years, accompanied by other complications and the shock of her son's death was too much for her overburdened heart.

Mrs. Winter, the former Isabelle James, was born in Cascade, Iowa on April 15, 1864, a little over 84 years ago. Shortly after her birth her parents took up temporary residence along the Boone River, east of Renwick where a few of the other early settlers were located. As soon as the log cabin was completed on the farm a half mile east of the present home, she moved with her parents and brothers and sisters to the new home and she grew up on this farm. For several years she and her sister, Louise, were dressmakers in Hardy. It was while she was thus engaged that she was married to John Winter on February 17, 1892. Following her marriage she moved to the farm where she has lived since. Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Winter: Verle, Homer, Lon, Everett and Eva.

Mrs. Winter was baptized into the Christian faith and became one of the early members of the Hardy Methodist church. She was one of the charter members of the Hardy Ladies Aid. For many years she was a leading figure in the life of the Hardy church.

She was preceded in death by her husband on December 14, 1942 and her son Lon, who passed away on May 30, 1948. She was the last surviving member of the pioneer James family. Her three brothers, Frank, Alfred, and George, and her three sisters, Christina, Hannah, and Louise all preceded her in death.

Members of the immediate family left to mourn her passing are, Homer of Greeley, Colorado, Verle and Everett at home, and Mrs. Herman (Eva) Krause of Renwick. Also there are four granddaughters, Marilyn and Shirley Winter of Greeley, Colorado, and Grace and Virginia Krause of Renwick.

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the home at 1:30 o'clock and at the Methodist church in Hardy at 2 o'clock. The Rev. Paul W. Neal delivered a very comforting sermon. Music was furnished by Mrs. Marshall Clancy and Mrs. Francis Krause. The hymns they sung were "Does Jesus Care." "Sweet Bye and Bye." and "Abide With Me." Piano accompaniment was played by Mrs. Harl Gimer of Renwick. There were man beautiful floral offerings and generous contributions to missions in memory of the departed one. Internment was made in the Vernon cemetery. The pallbearers were Andrew Clancy, Clifford Olden, A. H. Krause. G. C. Brock, Harry Stevenson and Arthur Saxton. The Beenen funeral home in Renwick was in charge of arrangements.

Out of town relatives and friends attending the services were: Mr. Homer Winter and daughter, Marilyn of Greeley, Colorado,; Mr. and Mrs. Don Thompson and daughter Dona, of Bridgeport, Washington; Mr. and Mrs. Gus Vohs of Algona; Carls Vohs and son Carl Jr. of West Bend; Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Lockwood of Burt; F. H.
