April 15, 1870 --- January 7, 1951

Jacob F. Elmer, son of Henry and Anna Baebler Elmer, was born April 15, 1870 at Matt in Brummbach, Canton Glarus, Switzerland. He came to the United States with his parents in April 1881, when he was 11 years old. He lived on a farm near Monroe, Wisconsin, until his mother's death in 1889. He then accompanied his Uncle Christopher to Nebraska. In the spring of 1890, he and his uncle bought a farm three miles west of Renwick.

Jacob F. Elmer and Magdalena Elmer were married at Dakota City, Iowa on April 26th, 1891. God blessed this marriage with eight children. In 1899 Jacob and Magdalena Elmer moved to Hebron, North Dakota, where they purchased land on which they lived the rest of their lives. Jacob Elmer was converted and united with the Evangelical Church. He helped to organize the present Evangelical United Brethren Church in Renwick and also the Evangelical United Brethren Church at Hebron. Mr. Elmer was active in civic affairs. He was a member of the North Dakota Legislature for four years. He also held other public offices and was particularly interested in those enterprises which brought benefits to the farmers and working people.

He was a kind father and husband. His family was a great joy to him. He passed to his eternal Home on Sunday morning, January 7, 1951. When a man's work is done, death is as natural and beautiful as falling leaves in autumn. Besides his wife, five brothers and three sisters, and two of his children, Fridolin Johaness and Anna Clara preceded him in death. Those who live to mourn his passing include his children, Henry of Wenatchee, Wash.; Mrs. Rachel Martell, Niobrara, Nebraska; Mrs. Marie Brown, Omaha, Nebr.; Jacob who farms near Hebron, N.D.; and Dick and Lena who lived with their father at Hebron, N.D.; Thirteen grandchildren, and two great grandchildren; other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held Friday, January 12 at the Methodist Church at Renwick with Rev. H. L. Sunderman, pastor of the Evangelical United Brethren Church, in charge. Robert Martell sang "Rock of Ages," "in the Garden," and "The Lord's Prayer," accompanied by Mrs. Eddie L. Bygness at the organ. Pallbearers were Pete Hefty, Dick Hefty, John Baumgartner, Chris Schneider, Frank French, and Edward Marty.
