Rev. Laurence Garrett, 82, died at his home in Burlington on July 21, 2013. Services were held July 27. Larry was born February 1, 1931. He married Claris Fern (Jamie) Jamison in 1958. He served United Methodist churches across Iowa for nearly 40 years, including the Belmond UMC from 1988 to 1996. He was preceded in death by his wife (2000).  He is survived by three sons; a brother; two sisters; and a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren.

OTTUMWA — Rev. Laurence Linebaugh Garrett, 82, of Burlington, died July 21, 2013, at his home. Rev. Garrett was born Feb. 1, 1931, in Clarinda at the Shady Brook Farm near Braddyville. He was the son of Max Martin and Eva Alice Linebaugh Garrett. He married Claris Fern (Jamie) Jamison Aug. 14, 1958, in Villisca. She died Jan. 3, 2000.

He graduated from Simpson College at Indianola and the Garrett Theological Seminary in Evanston, Ill. Serving the Iowa Annual Conference from 1957 until his retirement in 1994, he was the pastor at the Grace United Methodist Church from 1973-80.

He worked with the Boy Scouts and enjoyed riding his bike, being in the outdoors, doing yard work, participating in church activities and talking to people. He enjoyed his mission trips to Mexico. Service to the people was his life.

He is survived by three sons, Joel Garrett and Alan Garrett, both of Burlington, and Tobin (Melissa) Garrett of Ottumwa; one brother, Max (Joyce) Garrett of Eugene, Ore.; two sisters, Patty Hanson of Braddyville and Jean (Dr. Fred) Graham of East Lansing, Mich.; five grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and three stepgreat-grandsons. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and one stepgrandson.

Funeral services were held at the Grace United Methodist Church on Saturday; with Pastor Trevor Davis officiating. Interment was in Aspen Grove Cemetery on Monday; with Pastor Mike Orthel officiating. A memorial has been established for the Grace United Methodist Church.
