CLARIS FERN “JAMIE” GARRETT (Lawrence)
The daughter of Stuart and Mildred (Lock) Jamison, Claris Fern was born November 27, 1934 in Gravity, Iowa. She was a graduate of Clarinda, Iowa High School and of the Iowa Methodist School of Nursing, Des Moines, Iowa in 1956, earning her Registered Nurse license. During nursing school Claris was given the nickname of “Jamie” and it stuck with her the rest of her adult life. Jamie began her nursing career at the Washington County Hospital, Washington, Iowa where she encountered the young Rev. Lawrence Garrett calling on his parishioners. Jamie and Larry were married August 14, 1958 in the Villisca, Iowa United Methodist Church. From 1958 through 1979, Jamie worked part-time at hospitals in the various communities where Larry was appointed. From 1980-1985 she was the head nurse of the Hallmar Geriatric Unit of Mercy Hospital, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Jamie also served as an instructor at Indian Hills Community College in their Nurse Aide program. After Jamie and Larry left Ottumwa, Jamie was not actively employed in nursing, but served on the Conference Wellness Committee from 1988 until 1991. In 1996 Larry retired from the active ministry and they located to Burlington, Iowa. Throughout her married life, Jamie was an exemplary wife and mother, genuinely a homemaker. While active in each of Larry’s churches, Jamie was also her own person; enthusiastic, caring for others and responsive to church and community needs. Her hobbies included needlework, cross-stitch and knitting. In 1994, Jamie was diagnosed with Central Apnea, a breathing disorder which required assistive technology. On January 3, 2000, Jamie Garrett was called to the Lord at the age of 65. Her memorial service was held on January 7, 2000 at Grace United Methodist Church, Burlington, Iowa with the Revs. Trevor Davis and Jerry Oakland officiating. Inurnment is in the Aspen Grove Cemetery of Burlington, Iowa. Left to cherish Jamie’s memory are: her husband, Rev. Lawrence, three sons, Joel and Alan both of Burlington, Iowa, and Tobin of Ottumwa, Iowa; a brother, Bruce Jamison of Ankeny, Iowa; two sisters, Joyce Garrett and Elynor Wagle both of Eugene, Oregon; and three grandchildren.

[former resident of Belmond, Wright County, Iowa]
