March 17, 1849 ---- July 27, 1899

Mrs. W. O. Dean died at her home in Goldfield, Iowa, at 4:55 P.M. on Thursday, July 27th, 1899. Mrs. Elizabeth Beaver Dean, aged 50 years. The death of this good woman who had lived in Goldfield for thirty years came as a shock to our people, by whom she was universally beloved. Death was the result of a tumor which was discovered only a short time preceding her demise, and was accompanied with very great pain. She was first taken sick about two weeks ago while visiting at the home of Mrs. Stevens of Thrall. She was brought home and was there after confined to her bed until her corpse was lifted into her coffin. People who lived in Goldfield fifteen to twenty years ago can remember, as does the writer, the uniform kindness and good cheer of Mrs. Dean, who was probably familiar with the domestic arrangement of every house in town at that time; and if during the past few years all have not known her so well as did the residents of an earlier day, the only reason has been that the larger population together with her own advancing age made it impossible for Mrs. Dean to extend her ministrations over so wide a field. We never knew her to utter an unkind word, nor to refuse her help in time of need. If the world were filled with her likenesses, the millennium would not be so far off that we should despair of seeing its arrival.

Mrs. Dean was born at Oshkosh, Wisconsin, March 17, 1849. She emigrated to Goldfield, Iowa, in 1861, and was united in marriage to W. O. Dean in Marshall County in 1865. She leaves Mr. Dean and several children to mourn her loss.

**************

Seldom has a greater surprise or shock been felt here than was caused by the brief illness and death of Mrs. W. O. Dean, an early resident and of whom it is said "Everybody liked her." It was supposed she was an unusually strong woman but her suffering and death have proven this to be an error. She was always cheerful and kindly, being in much demand as a nurse on this account, seldom complained and worked very hard, although it now seems apparent often working when suffering. To this writer this seems heroic. All heroism is not found on fields of battle. Thoughtful friends called a specialist from Cedar Rapids and other physicians but all proved unavailing. A husband and three children and a large circle of friends mourn her departure. Her death occurred on July 27th, at 5 P.M. at her home in this place. Funeral services were held at the U. P. church Saturday forenoon, Rev. Findley officiating. The church was beautifully decorated, the floral decorations being very appropriate--one being a harp of flowers. The church, lecture room, vestibule and sidewalk were crowded with friends to pay their last regards to one they esteemed. Just one week previous to her death she visited friends at Thrall being taken sick there. Abler pens will give more fitting obituaries of Mrs. Dean.
