Slater, IA - Evelyn I. Lehman, 80, passed away May 21, 2013 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 29, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Slater. The family will receive friends 5 to 7 p.m. May 28, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Bethlehem Church Cemetery in Slater.

Evelyn was born August 4, 1932 to Clarence and Tena (Johnson) Gangestad in rural Wright County, IA. In her youth, Evelyn enjoyed growing up on the farm and playing sports. After attending country school and Clarion High School, she received degrees from Waldorf College and Concordia College. She was an elementary school teacher for over ten years in MN and IA.

Evelyn and Philip S. Lehman were married June 13, 1964 at Holmes Lutheran Church in Holmes, IA. On their farm outside of Alleman, IA, she did whatever was needed during both prosperous and challenging years. She especially enjoyed caring for her gardens. Evelyn loved music and traveled extensively. She volunteered countless hours for Bethlehem Lutheran Church and church synod organizations, school groups, farm organizations, and numerous charities. She was an avid follower of sports and politics. In 1993, she hosted First Lady Hillary Clinton at a rural health care forum at her home.

She is survived by her husband, Philip Lehman of Huxley; three sons, Matthew (Sarah) Lehman of Pleasantville, Luther (Jody) Lehman of Johnston and Aaron (Nicole) Lehman of Polk City; five grandchildren, Emily, Mattie, Owen, Jordan and Benjamin; her brother, Charles (Joan) Gangestad of Clarion; two sisters, Thelma (Darwin) Bang of Rochester, MN and Marilyn (Darrell) Bang of Joice; and one sister-in-law, Ella Gangestad of Eagle Grove. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, John Gangestad; and an infant brother, Norman Gangestad. Soderstrum Funeral Home in Slater is assisting the family with arrangements.
