April 30, 1883 --- January 16, 1976

Mrs. Alvena Arends, 92, died Friday evening, Jan. 16, 1976 at the Golden Acres Manor at Dows where she had resided for the past six months. She had been an invalid since 1965 in her home near Blairsburg. Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 19, at 1:30 p.m. at the Alexander Reformed church with the Rev. Virgil Dykstra officiating and with interment at the Alexander cemetry. Pallbearers were Jim Johnson, Larry Carstens, Bernard Arends, Eugene Olson, Bernard Hames, and Varlen Carlson. Mrs. Herman Boelman was organist for the services. A quartet, consisting of Mrs. Henry Koenan, Mrs. Merlin Bier, Mrs. Dennis Vanness, and Mrs. Roger Modderman, sang two selections.

Alvena Elizabeth Rehme, daughter of William and Elizabeth Rehme, was born at Pearl City, Illinois April 30, 1883. Her mother passed away when she was three years old and she was raised by her grandparents. She was confirmed at the Lanark, Illinois Evangelical Lutheran Church in 1898. She later was affiliated with the United Church of Christ, Congregational in Blairsburg. She married Berend (Ben) Arends on Oct. 8, 1899, at Loran, Illinois. To this union four children were born. Mr. and Mrs. Arends farmed at Alexander until 1928 when they moved to a farm near Iowa Falls. In 1932, they moved to Williams and farmed there prior to moving to Blairsburg where they had made their home since 1946. In 1949, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, in 1954; a son, Bernard, in 1968; one grandchild and one great-grandchild. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. J.D. (Beulah) Hossler and Mrs. Herman (Dorothy) Carstens, both of Blairsburg; Mrs. Henry (Claire) Johnson of Alexander; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Bernard Arends of Fort Dodge, 11 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one brother, William Rehme of Turlock, Ca. She had been a member of the Thimble club at Blairsburg for many years.
