George F. Sawin, Aged War Veteran Dies

George Francis Sawin, 84 years old, a veteran of the Civil war, died here Saturday afternoon at the home of his nephew, Frank Sawin, of 619 Seventh street. His death was caused by apoplexy.
Funeral services were held at 10 o'clock this morning at the Duckworth funeral home and were conducted by the Rev. R. M. Shipman of the First Methodist church. Members of the American Legion post assisted. The body was taken to Marshalltown for burial. Mr. Sawin was born September 25, 1843 in Worchester, Mass. In 1851 he went to Iowa and later Missouri. When the Civil War broke out he was a printer in Adel, Ia. He enlisted in company C of the 39th Iowa infantry, and served for nearly three years. After the Civil War, he returned to Adel, and later lived in Utah, Missouri and Wyoming. He entered the soldier's home at Marshalltown in 1919 and lived there until four years ago when he came to make his home with his nephew here. His wife, Sarah Beaver Sawin, whom he married at Goldfield in 1878, died in 1920. He leaves one brother, Walter Sawin, at Goldfield. He was a member of the Sheridan post No. 452 of the G.A.R. at Marshalltown.
