Maud Southwick McGowan

Maud Loretta Southwick, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Southwick of Renwick, Iowa, was born July 22, 1890 near Corwith, Iowa and died at her home south of Renwick, March 22nd, 1916, age 25 years 8 months. She moved with her parents to Renwick, Iowa in 1893 where she spent most of her life. She enrolled in the Renwick Public School in 1895 and completed the Course in May 1907. Being too young to teach she spent a year in Post Graduate work, preparatory to teaching. She became a successful teacher of Humboldt and Wright Counties and continued in that profession for a number of years.

She was united in marriage to William E. McGowan, January 1st, 1914. To this union was born an infant son, who with the father, her parents, two sisters and one brother, remain to mourn her untimely end. She united with the M. E. Church in Renwick in her childhood and remained a member until her marriage when her membership was changed to the United Presbyterian Church of Goldfield.

Maud possessed a genial disposition and was always happy and contented with her lot. She was kind, affectionate and a true friend and made many friends wherever she went. She bore up bravely during her illness and was hopeful, cheerful and patient to the last. She was willing to die and bid goodbye to all at her bedside, giving them all the blessed assurance that she would soon be happy, then in prayer, prayed for their guidance and protection through life.

Funeral services were held at the United Presbyterian Church in Goldfield at Goldfield, Saturday, 2 p.m. March 25th, 1916, conducted by Rev. W. G. Comip. The remains were laid to rest in Goldfield Cemetery. The following friends and relatives from out of town were present: Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Gearhart, Gretna, Neb.; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Dalbey, Des Moines, Iowa; I. J. Dalbey, Kellerton; T. H. Dalbey, Ames; E. A. Southwick, Corning; Mrs. Jess Ballou, Clarence; Mrs. Cora Rummel, Cedar Rapids; Mr. and Mrs. N. B. Richardson, Allison; G. H. Southwick, Des Moines; Lillian Tanck, Ames; Mrs. Riley and daughter, West Bend; Mr. and Mrs. John McGowan, Gladbrook; Mr. John N. McGowan, Gladbrook; Mr. and Mrs. John W. Young, Traer; and Inez Lee, from Iowa Falls.
