April 29, 1920 ---- November 8, 2002

Wendell Wilfred Woodbury, 82, a retired Foreign Service officer who once headed the economic section of the U.S. Embassy in Denmark, died of pneumonia Nov. 8 at Inova Alexandria Hospital. He had Alzheimer's disease. Mr. Woodbury began his 31-year Foreign Service career in 1949. His postings took him to the Dominican Republic, Algeria and twice to Japan. In Denmark, he was a counselor who occasionally served as deputy chief of mission. After his retirement in 1980, he divided his time between his homes in Alexandria and Marlborough, N.H. He was born in Crocker, S.D. and raised there and in Corwith, Iowa. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1942 and received a master's degree in economics from Harvard University. During World War II, he was an Army infantry captain in the Pacific. A son, Alden Woodbury, died in 1993. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Elizabeth Woodbury of Alexandria; a son, Jonathan Woodbury of Moorpark, Calif.; two brothers; and two grandchildren.
