WANAMINGO, MN — Virgil D. Nodland, age 80, of Wanamingo, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009, at Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls. Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 23, at 11 a.m. at Dale Lutheran Church in rural Kenyon, with Reverend Rell Spickerman and Reverend Paul Reppe officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Mahn Family Funeral Home–Larson Chapel in Zumbrota, and on Wednesday one hour prior to the service at the church.

Virgil Duane Nodland was born April 5, 1929, in Cherry Grove Township, Goodhue County, to Joseph and Ena S. (nee Sebby) Nodland. He grew up on the farm and attended country school. In 1947 he graduated from Wanamingo High School. Virgil farmed with his parents, and on Dec. 9, 1950, he married Doris Sands at Emmanuel Lutheran Church–Aspelund. They farmed the Nodland farm, and on March 31, 1980, Doris died. Virgil continued farming until the early 1980s, when he retired due to health problems. On Sept. 13, 1986, he married Adrienne Boraas at Dale Lutheran Church. They lived on the farm until Virgil entered the care center. Virgil was a member of Dale Lutheran Church and enjoyed fishing, bowling, traveling, dancing, taking care of his yard, gardening and picking raspberries.

Virgil is survived by his wife, Adrienne of Zumbrota; daughter, Becky (Mark) Brakke of Byron; stepchildren, Byron (Barb) Boraas of Zumbrota, Larry (Gayle) Boraas of Red Wing, Keith (Jody) Boraas of Zumbrota, and Kay (Mark) Spavin of Rochester; 13 grandchildren, Angela and Heather Brakke, Kathleen (Scott) Stepp, Mike (Tiffany) Boraas, Angela Boraas, Christina (Brandon) Rucker, Matthew (Melissa) Moen, Jared Moen, Andrew (Angela) Miller, Josh (Melissa) Boraas, Sam Boraas, Derek Spavin and Sara Spavin; and eight great-grandchildren. Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Ena; his first wife, Doris; three brothers, Elwood, Truman and Art; and one sister, Marian Larson.

Casketbearers are Angela and Heather Brakke, Mike, Josh and Sam Boraas, Andrew Miller and Derek Spavin. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Dale Lutheran Church.
