ROWAN, Iowa - Eugene I. (Louie) Hoopingarner, 74, of Rowan, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012, at the Iowa Specialty Hospital in Belmond. Funeral services for Louie Hoopingarner will be held at 10 a.m., Sat., Dec. 8, at the United Church of Rowan. Pastor Nancy Hofmeister will officiate. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery west of Rowan. Visitation for Louie Hoopingarner will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, at the Dugger Funeral Home, 111 Luick's Lane S., in Belmond, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

Eugene I. (Louie) Hoopingarner, age 74, of Rowan passed away Wednesday December 5, 2012 at the Iowa Specialty Hospital in Belmond. Funeral services for Louie Hoopingarner will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday December 8, 2012 at the United Church of Rowan. Pastor Nancy Hofmeister will officiate. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery west of Rowan. Visitation for Louie Hoopingarner will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Friday December 7, 2012 at the Dugger Funeral Home, 111 Luick’s Lane South in Belmond and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

Eugene Isaac, the son of Isaac and Esther Jensen Hoopingarner was born April 4, 1938 in Eldorado Springs, MO. At an early age, Eugene and his family moved to Rolfe, Iowa. Eugene attended school at the DMT School northeast of Rolfe and graduated from DMT High School in 1956. After high school, Eugene attended the University of Iowa, in Iowa City for radiology training and Waldorf College in Forest City.

Eugene was united in marriage to Katherine Hackbarth on September 4, 1971 at the United Methodist Church in Rowan. The couple made their home in Rowan. Throughout his life, Eugene worked in various capacities. After making his home in Rowan, he owned and operated a grocery store, hardware store, and worked the farmer’s cooperative in Rowan. Eugene retired from Allan’s Printing. He enjoyed wood-working, gardening, and enjoying nature in his backyard. Eugene’s most treasured moments were spent playing and spending time with his family, but his grandchildren most of all. Eugene was a member of the United Church of Rowan where he served in several key positions. He taught Sunday school, belonged to a men’s breakfast group and served on the administrative council. Eugene and Kathy were dedicated custodians at the church for over 20 years.

Eugene is survived by his wife, Katherine, children, Alice Bliss and Mitch of Forest City, Donna Johnson and A. J. of Tracy, MN, David Novak and Lora of Florida, Brenda Rauch and Steve of Clarion, Jodi Benetti and Marco of Adel, twelve grandchildren, Dustin, Cody, Jordan, Rosalee, Chandler, Casey, Ashley, Robert, Kimberly, Isabella, Vincent, Gianna, a great granddaughter, Sophia, a brother, Ray Hoopingarner and Janiece of Rolfe and several other nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Arthur Hoopingarner.
